Calling simple tasks ‘parties’ make bedtime a breeze

Our journalism will always be free because of donations from readers like you.

My oldest, River, is 3 years old. If you ask him, that means he’s a big boy. He’s learning the alphabet and how to use scissors. He can do simple chores such as putting dirty clothes in the hamper. He has (almost) mastered using the potty.

But if you ask me, River turning 3 came with a big personality and a lot of stubbornness.

I’m glad he’s finding independence, but I just want to get through the evening without a power struggle. I’ve recently learned if you call something a party, it makes it more exciting. And there’s a good chance he’ll do what I ask. Play time over? Clean-up party! Time to brush teeth? Toothbrush party! Bedtime? You guessed it, time for a sleeping party.

The best part is, my 20-month-old wants to be just like his big brother. He’ll usually follow along. Our nighttime routine has been a breeze since having all of these parties. I just hope they don’t get partied out anytime soon.
